JESUS CHRIST, OUR PASSOVER LAMB

The word Passover simply means "to pass” over or "to spare”. In Hebrew it is ‘PESACH’ and its real meaning can be obtained from the book of Exodus during when the Lord delivered the children of Israel out of bondage in Egypt. It was when the Angel of the Lord smote the first born of all living creatures including human beings in the Land of Egypt, except Israelis who had the blood of the killed Lamb on their lintels. It was during that time that God gave the children of Israel such a memorial service for ever to commemorate His deliverance for them while they were in bondage.

 (21) " Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. (22) And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. (23) For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. (24) And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. (25) And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. (26) And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? (27) That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD's passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.” EX.12:21-27

So it means the saving blood of the sacrificial Lamb of the Passover Feast was something highly memorable among God’s children. As such God saw the need to find a lasting solution to this and thus gave His only begotten Son as a ransom for our deliverance from this world of bondage in SIN. This means whatever happened in the land of Egypt was the Type which Ante-type should be fulfilled in us who believe in the sacrificial blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When the spirit of God illumined St. Paul, he was led to the true discovery that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is the Ante-type of the Passover lamb which was sacrificed for the very first time in Egypt and its subsequent occurrences during the yearly Passover feast. For the sake of this he wrote the following to edify the New Testament Christians thus:

"Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:” 1COR. 5:7

Apostle Paul’s exhortation here means Jesus Christ is the New Testament PASSOVER LAMB. Now that we know our Passover Lamb to be the very Messiah whom we hope on, we all have to observe the Passover Feast without any malice throughout our livelihood. Don’t say that you are not a citizen of the Israel nation and that you are excluded from this participation. No, that is a wrong notion. Note that the Type that is the physical Passover lamb was meant for some few people, that is, fleshly Israelites; but ours the Ante-type, Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, as the Passover Lamb is meant for universal people.

Also if one carefully studies that quotation above, it could be deduced that the letter containing such exhortation was specifically written to Gentiles and not Israelites per se. The Corinthians to whom this letter was addressed, were not Jews or Israelites, but rather they were Greeks who represent GENTILES. So as gentile Christians, it behooves us to emulate this good example of observing the Passover feast. This is because Christ, Our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed for us all.

However, Jesus Christ is not only the Passover Lamb, but also THE LAMB OF GOD meant for the remission of sins of this world. Remember, I have already explained this above with the example of John the Baptist’s confessions that Jesus is the Lamb that takes away the sin of the world. JOHN1:29,36 Here also I want you to know that it is a well established truth that Christ’s sacrificial death was ordained from the foundation of this world; to be precise, when our first parents sinned against their creator God. All that we ought to know about Christ Jesus’ death is that, it was purported from the beginning of this world due to man’s fall from the glory of God which affected all humanity. Just read the following reports in the book of Revelation to know that Christ was sacrificed from the foundation of this world.

"And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.” REV.5:6

" And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” REV. 13:8

Do you know why it is so? It is simple to understand this from the book of Genesis when the Lord prepared ANIMAL’S SKIN to cover Adam and Eve after their transgression made them saw that they were naked.

" Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” GEN.3:21

As you are aware, no one can have animal’s skin without a slaughter. Herein lies the mystery about how the Lamb of God was slain from the foundation of this world. For simplicity sake, it means the beast, being or animal, slain or killed to obtain the skin to cover Adam and his wife was a Lamb. You know one thing, it was not the skin alone that was needed, but also the Lamb’s blood was used to purify or cleanse them from their sin of disobedience against the Most High God the Creator of this universe. This is because it is reported in the book of Hebrews that it is only sacrificial BLOOD that can ensure the FORGIVENESS or Remission of SIN.

" And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” HEB. 9:22

As a matter of fact, this physical Sacrificial Blood of Christ came at the right time and is even surprising that it did not happen on any day but the DAY ON WHICH THE PASSOVER LAMB is killed. That is during His life time, the very last Passover feast that coincided with Christ death occurred at a time that all prophecies concerning Jesus Christ the Passover Lamb was fulfilled to the letter. This is why after His resurrection Jesus, having taught those men on the way to Emmaus, explained to some of his disciples at Jerusalem that whatever was written about Him in the Old Testament had been or would be fulfilled (LK.24:44 -49).

(14) " And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! (15) But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priest answered, We have no king but Caesar. (16) Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. (17) And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: (18) Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.” JOHN 19:14-18

Hallelujah!!!! Holy and Great is our God who exposes mysteries unto His children at the right time and reveals His thoughts to those who fear Him (i.e. fear to disobey Him) in order to lead them into His marvelous truths. PS. 25:14,5 Upon this basis God revealed His Beloved Son unto this sinful world to redeem us from our BONDAGE of sin in this end time to atone for all sins even including that of Adam, just because of what happened in the Garden of Eden which has affected all humanity (ROM. 5:6-19). So He appeared in this end time to fulfill the act of the sacrifice of the Lamb to purge us from our sins.

(24) "For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: (25) Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; (26) For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” HEB. 9:24-26

This text above is very important to me, because it shows why the Day of Atonement on which day the High Priest sacrificed animals during the olden days to ATONE for everyone’s sin is also important in our modern day Christianity. For instance, the 25th verse shows that Christ’s death signifies the atonement service carried on by the High Priest every year, thus His death came as a substitution. This means the embodiment of Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross is manifold. Christ paid the death penalty resulting from sins we committed. That is to say, it represents the general sin offering carried on day by day, Atonement Day yearly sacrifice and the Passover Lamb sacrifice. CLICK HERE FOR MORE
